User Review of iWriter: Writing for Others

One of the ways I have made some additional income over the past few years is by writing articles for other people. If you had read my first post then you would know that this is something I discovered I do not like doing. That being said, there were times when I had the opportunity to quickly do a re-write or two and earn some cash.

As a writer for the site iWriter I have to say that it took me a while to make any significant money. When I first signed up I was a 'standard' writer and therefore was unable to access the higher paid jobs. After completing a number of articles and having most of them accepted, and receiving good reviews, I moved up to the next level Premium. This opened up access to both a larger number of jobs and also better paid jobs. I continued to write as many as I could until I reached the top level (at that time) of Elite writer. Now I was able to access all writing jobs including some that were pretty well paid.

iWriter pays out every Tuesday provided you have a minimum of $25 earned in your account. If you work consistently you can make this easily in a day, provided the work is there. Unfortunately there are days when there is very little work, and there are some dedicated full-time writers who quickly snatch up the higher paid jobs. This does not mean that there isn't room for more writers, because there is.

If you were to compare the per word rate on iWriter to that of a freelance writer completing articles for popular blogs, magazines, and the like it is not very good. However, if you have not tried your hand at writing for others then iWriter is a great place to start. You can test the waters with a 150 word article and see how that is received. If you get that article accepted and a good review then try another. I did all short articles when I first started because I wanted to fast track my way to the higher paid ones. I suggest that if you are serious about making money this way you should do that too.

iWriter has now added an even higher level of writer called Elite Plus. In order to achieve and maintain this level you must have at least 40 ratings (not difficult if you do the 150 word articles) and an average rating of 4.85 stars. Because I haven't written consistently on there for quite some time I never achieved the highest status. At time of writing I have an average of 4.7986 stars.

Article quality is judged by the requester, and this can cause some problems. For the most part I found requesters (what iWriter calls their customers) very fair and happy with the work I did for them. Once in a while you may find someone will treat you unfairly or badly. In one instance I even had my article rejected because the requester believed it to be completely off topic! It wasn't. What had happened was the requester had made an error in their request description and so had ended up awarding the writing job to myself and another writer. The other writer finished their article before I did, so theirs was accepted and mine rejected.

Rejections are par for the course and should not be taken personally. If you have read all of the instructions and believe that you have written the article as directed, then there really is very little else you can do, however once rejected that article is now YOUR property! I am reluctant to say this and yet in the interests of being completely transparent, I believe that I was once victim to a rejection and that the requester copied my article and then rejected it to avoid paying. This is fortunately a very rare occurence and certainly is not enough to deter you from writing on the site.

Here are some tips for making the most of iWriter:

1. When you first start, write as many short articles (150 - 300) as possible so that you can work your way quickly up to at least Premium writer. This will provide you with better paying jobs and more of them.

2. Fill out your profile as accurately and completely as you can. Provide details of your writing experience, and if you have particular topics that you are very knowledgeabe about be sure to include those in your profile.

3. Add a note to your profile requesting that if your written article is not exactly what the requester wanted, that you be given the chance to fix it. This hopefully will help reduce the number of articles that get rejected.

4. Follow requester instructions closely. It is important that you get it right the first time because some requesters will not give you a second chance.

5. Develop relationships with requesters where possible. If you write several articles for the one requester you may find that they will specifically request you to write more, and this can turn into a lucrative deal if they are in need of a large number of articles. Be aware, however, that some requesters will add you to a 'pool' of writers that they like to use and you will still be competing with others - just a fewer number.

6. Spell check! Please, always run your article through spell check before submitting. it is unprofessional and sloppy to submit articles with mistakes in both spelling and grammar. It only takes a few seconds to check.

7. If you don't like writing articles from scratch iWriter has a section for re-writes. Once I had established myself as an Elite writer I opted to do re-writes more often than not. There are fewer jobs requested though.

Conclusion: I firmly believe that iWriter offers a fantastic opportunity for someone to 'test the waters' but if you are wanting to make a serious income you will need to move onto better paid writing sites, or start your own freelance writing website where you can charge higher rates.
